SINGAPORE: Maris Stella High School (MSHS) and Woodlands Ring Secondary School (WRSS) will be rebuilt in the next few years, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced on Monday (May 6).

From 2027 to 2029, the campuses of MSHS (Primary) and MSHS (Secondary) at 25 Mount Vernon Road will be rebuilt to “provide better facilities and enhance students’ educational experience”, MOE said in a press release.

During the rebuilding, MSHS (Primary) will move to the former MacPherson Primary School site at 2 Mattar Road, while MSHS (Secondary) will move to the former Bedok North Secondary School Site at 20 Jalan Damai.

According to Google Maps, the holding site for the primary school is a 2.7km drive from its permanent home, while the secondary school's holding site is about a 4.6km drive away.

MSHS (Primary) will become coeducational and take in girls when it moves to its holding site in 2027, said MOE, adding that this was agreed by MSHS Ltd's board of directors and the Marist Brothers Provincial Council.

The school will also look into increasing its Primary 1 intake in 2027.

"To accommodate this larger intake, MSHS (Primary) will also operate on a partial single-session at the holding site during the rebuilding of its permanent campus," said MOE.

When its permanent campus is ready, tentatively in 2030, MSHS (Primary) will revert to operating on a single-session basis. MSHS (Secondary) will remain as an all-boys school "for now", said MOE.

During the temporary relocation, the permanent site at 25 Mount Vernon Road will continue to be used to determine the home-school distance for the Primary 1 registration exercises.

The home-school distance is calculated based on the shortest distance from any point on the school's land boundary to the applicant's residential address.

With the rebuilding of the permanent campus, there may be changes to the school's land boundary.

Parents can use the Singapore Land Authority's OneMap SchoolQuery to check the home-school distance.

WOODLANDS RING SECONDARY SCHOOL

WRSS will be fully rebuilt to "provide new facilities that will better support teaching and learning", said MOE.

The campus was scheduled for upgrading from January 2025 to December 2026.

“There is no change to the plan for WRSS and Fuchun Secondary School (FCSS) to merge from January 2025,” MOE said.

The ministry previously announced that WRSS and FCSS would merge in January 2025. After the merger, the new school will operate from FCSS' site at 21 Woodlands Avenue 1.

It will move back to the current WRSS site when rebuilding works are completed in December 2028.

DSA EXERCISE

The Direct School Admission (DSA) exercise for admission to secondary schools and junior colleges in 2025 will open for applications from May 7.

Secondary schools and JCs can take up to 20 per cent of their non-Integrated Programme intake via the DSA exercise.

Students will be informed of the outcome of their DSA application by schools. If an offer is made, students will need to make a decision to take up the offer by the deadline, which will be before the release of the national examination results.

A student who takes up a DSA offer is guaranteed a place in that secondary school, provided their PSLE result meets the minimum requirement for a posting group that the school admits students from.

Those who are admitted to a school via DSA will not be eligible to take part in the Secondary 1 posting exercise or Joint Admissions Exercise. They will also not be allowed to transfer to another school after getting their results.

Students applying to a secondary school via DSA may do so via the MOE DSA-Sec website from 11am on May 7 to 3pm on Jun 3. A parent’s Singpass login will be needed for the application.

For those applying to JCs, applicants should check the DSA-JC website for dates and timelines.

"Interested students should visit the respective JCs’ websites as application periods, procedures and selection criteria may differ," said the ministry.

EARLY ADMISSION TO ITE, POLYTECHNICS

Applications for early admission to the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and polytechnics based on course-specific aptitude and interests will start on May 21 and Jun 3 respectively.

The Early Admissions Exercise (EAE) provides a pathway for graduating ITE, N-Level and O-Level students, as well as working adults with at least two years of relevant working experience to apply for and receive conditional offers for admission.

Beyond academic grades, EAE applicants are considered based on their aptitude and interest in a specific course. Applicants may be required to submit portfolios, undergo interviews and take aptitude tests as part of the selection process.

Successful applicants under both the ITE and polytechnic EAEs will be given conditional offers before receiving their final examination results. For their conditional offer to be confirmed, they must meet the minimum entry requirements of the offered course.
