For most, a trip to Norway or Iceland to witness the famed Northern Lights might be out of reach. Thankfully, those in Singapore will soon get to marvel at the next closest thing.
Gardens by the Bay's upcoming art installation Borealis simulates the Lights' visuals and atmosphere by combining "layers of light and cloud particles" and "illuminating the night skies of Supertree Grove".
Couple that with the soundtrack by French composer Guillaume Desbois and you've got yourself an ethereal experience right here in sunny Singapore.
Created by Switzerland-based artist Dan Acher, the installation has made multiple stops in cities worldwide, including Seoul and Birmingham. And at each stop, Borealis has commanded a large crowd who has sung praises for it. One visitor called it "amazing and unforgettable".
According to Acher's website, "Borealis is both a work of art and a technological performance. Beams of light travel through particle clouds to create the illusion and while we can harness the technology, the outcome is beyond our control."
"Variations in wind, humidity and temperature make Borealis an ever-changing installation – it’s always unique. At the end of the day, we can only set the stage for the effect to appear. Ultimately, nature holds the final say."
Admission to Borealis is free. A preview will be held on Saturday (May 4) from 7.30pm to 8.15pm. Following that, the installation will be open to members of the public from Sunday (May 5). Do note that Borealis only operates on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. More information can be found on Gardens by the Bay's website.
