SINGAPORE: The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on Tuesday (Mar 26) recalled two products containing red yeast rice, after health supplements with the ingredient were recalled in Japan over suspected health risks.

SFA said it was recalling Mio Sparkling Sake Premium (Rose), which comes in 300ml and 750ml bottles, following the voluntary recall of the two products in Japan by its manufacturer Takara Shuzo International.

The two products contained red yeast rice, or "beni koji".

Japanese drugmaker Kobayashi Pharmaceutical said on Tuesday it is investigating one death and dozens of hospitalisation cases linked to its health supplement, which contained red yeast rice.

The ingredient is also supplied to around 50 other firms in Japan and two in Taiwan.

“As a precautionary measure, SFA has directed the importer, Pan Pacific Retail Management (Singapore), to recall the implicated products. The recall is ongoing.”

SFA advised those who have bought the recalled products not to consume it, while those who did and are unwell should seek medical attention.
