Named after blooming flowers, Pink Moon dazzles despite cloudy skies in Singapore

SINGAPORE: The Pink Moon still dazzled on Wednesday (Apr 24) night despite cloudy conditions over Singapore.

Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong shared a photo of the bright full moon framed by Housing Board blocks.

“Did you manage to catch the full Pink Moon tonight despite the cloudy sky?” he said on Facebook and Instagram.

“Did you know that the 'Pink Moon' was not named because it is pink in colour, but for the colour of spring flowers that bloom at this time of year?”

Despite its name, April’s full moon is not meant to be of a rosy hue.

It is actually named after the pink phlox wildflowers that bloom in North America in the early spring, the Science Centre Observatory (SCOB) of Singapore told CNA previously.

Each full moon in a year has its own moniker, tied to cultural observances that mark the changing seasons. Among them are Flower, Strawberry and Harvest, as well as March’s Worm Moon.

Several Facebook commenters responded to Mr Wong’s post and shared their photos taken from various locations in Singapore including Marina Barrage and Mountbatten.

And although moonrise was set for 7.22pm, many had to wait until later for the clouds to pass.

“Did you spot the full Pink Moon tonight?” Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies Heng Swee Keat said in a post on Facebook.

Mr Heng enclosed a photo taken by a Bedok volunteer at a campsite in East Coast Park. The moon shone brightly and dozens of ships were also seen illuminating the horizon.

A member of CloudSpotting & SkySpotting Singapore, a public group on Facebook, shared a view of the Pink Moon rising over Punggol, peeking from behind blocks of flats.

Facebook user Carol Chia said she caught the sight between 7.28pm and 7.50pm.

Regular CNA contributor A Kannan waited until just past 11pm for his photographs.

"The 'pink' full moon illuminating the sky tonight at a distance about 400,816km away from Earth," he said.

SUPERMOON SEASON

There will be four consecutive supermoons from August to November this year.

The one in October will be the closest to Earth while the full moon in August - known as the Sturgeon Moon - will also be a Blue Moon as it happens to be the third full moon of the season, said SCOB.

"While there is no official definition for the supermoon, these four full moons in August, September, October and November occur when the moon is relatively nearer to the Earth, causing it to appear brighter and more prominent," said SCOB.

While it goes without saying that unobstructed views, minimal light pollution and clear skies are key to getting a good view, the observatory also advised that timing be taken into consideration.

“Generally, it is a good time to enjoy a supermoon close to moonrise or moonset, when the moon is close to terrestrial objects, trees or buildings that we are familiar with. The large apparent size of the supermoon will be more obvious when we have something to compare its size with.”
