SINGAPORE: A recall has been issued for Everest Fish Curry Masala due to the presence of ethylene oxide at levels exceeding the permissible limit, said the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on Thursday (Apr 18).

Ethylene oxide is a pesticide not authorised for use in food, although it is allowed to be used in the sterilisation of spices, added SFA.

The move comes after the Centre for Food Safety in Hong Kong issued a notification on the recall of the spice blend.

As Everest Fish Curry Masala was imported into Singapore, SFA has directed the importer, Sp Muthiah & Sons, to recall the implicated products.

The affected products are made in India and weigh 50g, with a best-before date of September 2025. The recall is ongoing.

Although there is no immediate risk to consumption of food contaminated with low levels of ethylene oxide, long-term exposure may lead to health issues, SFA said.

"Therefore, exposure to this substance should be minimised as much as possible," it added.

Consumers who have bought the implicated products should not consume it, said SFA.

"Those who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice. Consumers may contact their point of purchase for enquiries."
